Report and analysis of Phaistos disc circa 1600 BCE.
Presented by Bruce C. Friedman
Prepared November 27, 2003.
Last modified: November 28, 2003.
Introduction: I have chosen to review the undeciphered content of the Minoan/Cretan Phaistos disc. It is a clay tablet about 16cm in diameter. This tablet is written [imprinted] in Linear A hieroglyphs of obscure and unknown origin and meaning. It was excavated in 1908 at the Minoan palace [of Phaistos] at Hagia Triada in Crete. This disc is reasonably dated to 1600 BCE or prior. It is now in the holdings of the Archaeological Museum of Herakleion; [Inv. no.]: EP 1358
I endeavor to identify any likely mathematical content in the inscription and familiarize myself with the layout and analyze the patterns that can be found within all symbol strings [words].
Largely by instinct, I have identified one word that seems more likely to refer to a numerical quantity than the others. I believe many of the other words may refer to personal names or titles. As I do not know how to verify this, all we can do is look closely at emerging patterns.
Refer to my images of the obverse and reverse of this tablet:
OBVERSE: http://www.mathorigins.com/image grid/PHAISTOS_001.htm
REVERSE: http://www.mathorigins.com/image grid/PHAISTOS_002.htm
Obverse: [Clockwise from the outer edge from the start to the center:]
Symbols are arbitrarily assigned numbers as shown on this link:
http://www.mathorigins.com/image grid/PHAISTOS_003.htm
Underlined symbols represent word breaks.
Red symbols refer to the tail [a vowel or accent or pluralization?] on some words’ last symbol.
Words will be referred to by their assigned origin,
ex. O102 refers to the word A1-E6-B7-A2 on the obverse beginning at position 102.
These word assignments include a word length, ex. *4 for a length of 4 symbols.
If I find that I am able to identify mirrored symbols, signifying a die that was pressed upside down, these too will be colored.
To date, I have not securely identified that this does occur on the tablet.

One consideration is that all [four of the unique] 2 – 3 – 4 and 5 symbol words that appear more than once, have a vowel at the end.
See:
2 symbols: O57 and O82
3 symbols: O9 and R77
4 symbols: O59 and O72 and O84
Another consideration is that one and only one unique word of each length appears twice or more.

3 symbols: O9 and R77
4 symbols: O59 and O72 and O84
6 symbols: O51 and O76

Of the 54 unique words, 10 begin with A1-E6.
Of the 10 unique words that begin with A1-E6, only one is on the reverse. See R1*5.
I find this indicative of the similar likelihood of finding the word “Mister” in a list of names.
Perhaps this list refers to personnel, but surely it is some kind of LIST!
As the special tecnique of this stamped, fired clay tablet requires much more labor than writing, perhaps this is a dedicatory / prayer item and again perhaps the content is a list of prayer words / incantations.

10 unique words end in vowels. Of these, only two begin with A1-E6; see D1v and E7v. |
Only one voweled word appears on both sides of the tablet: D6-C6-A5v.
See: 3 and a half words [15 symbols]:

22 of the 45 unique symbols can be found following A1-E6 [anywhere] in the words that begin with A1-E6.
Only 7 of these occur more than once: A2; B7; D3; D8; E1; E7; F4.
The only 3 symbols that appear twice consecutively within a word:
D6: see D6-D6-E2 [See O12*3]
C1: see D6-C1-C1-F8-E1 [See R50*5]
D3: see A1-E6-D3-D3-E1-C8-B8 [See O63*7 and O112*7]
Closing statement: The content and layout are imprinted with some care in a fashion resembling the technology of movable type printing. Some references to inverted or mirrored symbols have been seen by me but I have not yet identified the symbols in question that may have been produced this way or come to understand what type of die-tool could have been used in this fashion. Still digging and still hoping to “prove” that R21 symbol string is a quantity!
